Improving patient outcomes: A model of care for breathlessness
Professor Claudia Bausewein (PhD MD MSc) qualified in medicine from Munich University in 1992. Her medical background is internal medicine but she has been involved in palliative care in Germany for more than 30 years.
Professor Bausewein completed an MSc in Palliative Care at King’s College London in 2003 and received her PhD from King’s College London in 2009. She worked as Consultant in Palliative Medicine at the University of Munich and as senior clinical research fellow in the Cicely Saunders Institute at King’s College London. Since 2012, Professor Bausewein holds the Chair for Palliative Medicine at Munich University and is the Director of the Department of Palliative Medicine at Munich University Hospital.
Professor Bausewein has been involved in a variety of national and international activities in palliative medicine including the development of the German evidence and consensus-based guideline for palliative medicine in patients with incurable cancer and she is the co-chair of the European Association for Palliative Care Taskforce on outcome measurement in palliative care. She is currently secretary of the German Association for Palliative Medicine and was a Member of the Board of Directors of the European Association for Palliative Medicine from 2011 – 2012. Her research focuses on breathlessness in advanced disease, complexity, outcome measurement and palliative care in non-cancer patients.
